Our History
In A Nutshell

Did you know Magners Original Irish cider is actually called Bulmers in Ireland? But Bulmers in the UK is a completely different cider to Magners. Bulmers in the UK is actually made by Heineken, the multi national brewing giant. So whatever you do, don’t get the two mixed up.

It’s a confusing tale. But we can explain…

A long time ago, in Clonmel, Tipperary, there lived a talented young lad called William Magner. Or Willie to his friends. His life’s ambition was to produce the world’s most perfect cider. So in 1935 Willie invested in a dozen oak barrels and his quest began.

Soon Willie’s cider became so popular he went in search of some extra help so he could expand his company. He crossed the Irish Sea to England, where he stumbled across another cider maker called H. P. Bulmer. They soon became great friends and business partners, so Willie sold his cider in Ireland under the Bulmers trademark.

One day the two friends had a falling out and parted company for good. But Willie was allowed to keep the Bulmers name for the cider he made in Ireland.

By 1999 Willie’s cider had become so popular that his dedicated successors wanted to share it beyond the Irish shores.

They couldn’t use the Bulmers name outside Ireland, so they named it Magners Original Irish Cider, in honour of the great man himself.
